Cutting concrete is a complex job that requires specialized tools and saw blades. There are many variables that must be taken into account when selecting the right one for the job. Here’s what you should know about the most common types of blades used for cutting concrete.
Corundum Masonry Blades
Corundum is a very hard form of aluminum oxide used as an abrasive for cutting tough materials, grinding optical glass and polishing metals. These blades are inexpensive, widely available and only create minimal amounts of dust when cutting.
However, the material wears down quickly and gets hot enough to visibly glow, so you have to take breaks every 30 seconds when using a corundum masonry blade to cut concrete. These are best for small, shallow cuts, or projects with limited budgets.
Diamond Blades
Diamond blades are commonly composed of a mixture of synthetic diamond fragments and a bond, usually made of metal powders, that holds the diamonds together. Because diamond is the hardest natural substance on earth, these blades are used for cutting everything from concrete and stone to semiconductor materials, diamonds and other gemstones. They can be used wet or dry.
• Dry cutting diamond blades.
These blades are better for longer, deeper cuts than a regular masonry blade. The serrated or toothed edge helps to keep the blade cool. Dry cutting blades are used when there are electrical currents nearby or work sites that must be kept dry. However, they tend to create more dust than the alternatives when cutting concrete.
• Wet cutting diamond blades.
These blades produce the cleanest, smoothest cuts in the shortest amount of time. They can have serrated or smooth edges and are used with saws that provide a continual spray of water to keep the blade cool and trap dust produced by the sawing process. While they’re a lot more durable than corundum or dry cutting blades, they’re also more expensive and require a special saw. Wet cutting diamond blades are often used by professional cement cutters, as they’re the best for big jobs that require a lot of cutting.
